Universal Looking At Possible ‘Snow White And The Huntsman’ Sequel

With Universal Pictures looking for their next big franchise to go alongside “Fast Five” and the recently announced reboot of the “The Mummy,” one of their big summer movies opening soon, “Snow White and the Huntsman,” could get be that franchise.

Universal Studios president and COO Ron Meyer talked to The Hollywood Reporter about the current film slate at Universal and the possibility of sequels to its upcoming films. THR writes, “Meyer said that while the upcoming Snow White and the Huntsman doesn’t appear to lend itself to a sequel, Universal thinks it can do more movies based on the character of the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) if it is successful.”

Universal is also working on “Despicable Me 2,” and is looking at more Dr. Suess stories to make into feature films, with a “Cat in the Hat” remake already in the works.

Gary Ross Now Back In Talks For ‘Catching Fire’

First he’s off, now he’s back on – it was reported last week that “The Hunger Games” director Gary Ross wouldn’t be returning to helm the sequel “Catching Fire.” Looks like everyone spoke too soon.

Looks like Ross is back to the negotiating table for Round 2 of directing talks for the sequel. The problem is going to be the tight pre-production window of four months before they can start shooting.

Jennifer Lawrence is contractually obligated to the “X-Men: First Class” sequel shooting in January. That contract supersedes her Hunger Games one, so Catching Fire will have to shoot in August. Ross still hasn’t signed on yet because of that tight schedule. Money is probably another issue, but I’m sure we’ll find out more by this week.

Gary Ross Won’t Be Directing The ‘Hunger Games’ Sequel

This is kind of a shock – Gary Ross, who directed the enormously successful film adaptation of “The Hunger Games,” won’t be returning to direct the sequel “Catching Fire.”

Lionsgate and Fox worked out scheduling issues for Jennifer Lawrence so she could shoot “Catching Fire” in the fall for Lionsgate and the “X-Men: First Class” sequel for Fox in January. Now all Lionsgate needs is a director to replace Ross, who reportedly didn’t turn down the sequel because of money, but because he doesn’t like repeating his projects.

Lionsgate is now scrambling to find a replacement director, and I’m sure they’ll have someone soon. Catching Fire is scheduled to open in AMC Theatres on November 22nd, 2013.

Nicole Kidman Could Play Grace Kelly

Here’s a piece of interesting casting info – Nicole Kidman is currently in negotiations to play Grace Kelly, one of the most legendary actresses in cinematic history.

Kidman would star in “Grace of Monaco” a story, according to Variety, about “Kelly as a former Oscar winner and mother of two who had already spent six years as the monarch of a European nation. The retired starlet was called upon to save Monaco from an escalating situation regarding its standing as a tax haven, with French leader Charles de Gaulle giving her husband, Monaco’s Prince Rainier III, six months to reform its tax laws.”

The movie will be directed by Olivier Dahan.

‘Captain America 2’ Release Date Confirmed

Marvel Studios has announced that “Captain America 2” will be released in theatres in early April of 2014. The sequel to the popular “Captain America: The First Avenger” will “pick-up where the highly anticipated Marvel’s The Avengers (May 4, 2012) leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world,” according to a Studio release.

The film may work as a bridge between “The Avengers” 1 and 2 and may begin production as soon as “Thor 2” is wrapped.
